A by-election to find a new councillor for the Mount/Papamoa Ward will be held on February 17, 2015 following the resignation of councillor Clayton Mitchell.
Mr Mitchell resigned from his position as Tauranga City Councillor on Monday, October 20, the same day he was sworn into Parliament. The resignation waseffective immediately.
During his time as a councillor Mr Mitchell was deputy chair of the City Delivery Committee.
The committee would elect a new deputy chair at their meeting on November 18, 2014.
He was also deputy chair of the Nga Poutiri Ao o Mauao (Mauao Joint Administration Board) and the TCC trustee on Envirohub. New appointees would be elected at the Council meeting to be held on December 15, 2014.
Until a new councillor was elected, Tauranga City's elected Council would consist of nine councillors and the Mayor. During this period, if the council or a committee was unable to reach a majority vote on an issue, the chairperson may choose to cast the deciding vote.
Mayor Stuart Crosby said he would like to thank Mr Mitchell for his contribution to the city as an elected member.
"During his time on the Council Clayton has provided an invaluable perspective to Council discussions and decision making.
"He is absolutely committed to working for the residents and ratepayers of Tauranga and I know this will continue as he moves into his role in Parliament. On behalf of the Council I would like to wish him well for his future."
