Deputy Mayor Kelvin Clout has announced he will run for the Mayoralty in 2016 after Mayor Stuart Crosby said he would not be standing.
New-comer Kelvin Clout won a seat on Tauranga City Council in last year's local body elections and was appointed as Deputy Mayor.
Mr Crosby has been in the mayoral position since 2004, completing his fourth term.
Mr Clout said he admired the current mayor.
"We do not always agree on how best to address the city's issues but I have great admiration for Stuart and the resilience he has shown over many years. He has successfully dealt with major flooding events, the global financial crisis, the Rena disaster and often a dysfunctional Council."
