Handing out awards at Tauranga Intermediate this past week was an absolute honour. As I awarded Cole Anderson the Premier Niwa award for inventing a digital speed sign that changes with weather conditions, I was, once again, awed by the privilege I have of serving all of you.
Becoming a List MP for New Zealand First, just one year ago, has given me the chance to represent your interests. I have the honour of celebrating in your triumphs and standing with you in your grief. I have the duty of advocating that which is in your best interest and fighting against that which is not.
By joining the team at New Zealand First, I rose to the commitment of keeping this Government honest and have striven to be worthy of that title every week since, whether sitting in the House of Parliament or in Tauranga, during recess.
Looking back at this year, I am proud to reflect on having fought for the safe removal of the Rena, the protection of our harbour, the safety of small and medium sized businesses, the completion of the Turret Road extension, the protection of State-housing, the preservation of our flag, the rights of the Regions, health and safety measures for our quarries, the protection of our boarders, increased efficiency in our exports, more affordable health care, the banning of shark-cage diving, and the closing of the massive gap between the haves and the have-nots at every opportunity.
Notable victories include the expansion of free health care to under-13s, the partial adoption of our regional immigration policy, and the significant increased awareness of the dangerous TPPA agreement.
