"As a primary healthcare provider we are in a unique position to see how hard it is for some people," Dr Roberton says.
"The foodbank had been identified by Pyes Pa and, given it had momentum, we wanted to join in and keep that going."
He says the centres' fundraisers are always well supported.
"We think we've got the best staff and patients around and our staff are always keen to help within our community – it's why we do the jobs we do.
"There has been some good energy and discussion about what we can provide. I really hope we can continue to highlight and promote such a noble cause and make people think about other causes and make a worthwhile gift."
Roberton says Christmas is a time for giving and there is also good evidence to suggest people who donate their time, effort or resources are happier, healthier people who live longer.
"Who wouldn't want to encourage that?"
Papamoa Pines Medical Centres will also be giving a cash donation to women's refuge.
"We usually do secret Santa amongst staff but this year we wanted to help out our community so instead of giving each other a gift our staff have been asked to donate that money to our charity of choice and the directors have agreed to match those donations."
Everyone should give what they can at this time of year, Roberton says.
"For some that might only be a word of encouragement or a smile or an offer to carry a shopping bag to the car, but people should try it out. It makes you feel good."
