The Chiefs struggled to a 22-16 win over the gallant Melbourne Rebels at Waikato Stadium tonight which moves them into second place overall on the Super Rugby standings.
Despite a bright start and comfortable 19-6 halftime lead, the Chiefs ran out of energy and accuracy in the second spell, as the tiring trip back from South Africa clearly took its toll.
The Rebels failed to make use of a one-man advantage in the final five minutes as the famed Chiefs defensive line held strong.
New first-five Gareth Anscombe was outstanding for the Chiefs.
His 100 per cent goal kicking record produced 17 points and was a key factor in the victory.
The Chiefs have a much sterner test next Saturday night back at Waikato Stadium when they take on the Crusaders in what will be Bay of Plenty's Tanerau Latimer's 100th match for the Chiefs.
