Mount Maunganui firefighters used a traditional "bubble test" to find the location of a gas leak early this morning.
Staff at Mount Mellick, on Maunganui Rd, were closing up about 1.50am when they smelled gas in the area and called 111.
Firefighters arrived and also smelled gas, station officer Lindsay Nicol said.
The brigade used a gas detector and found the leak coming from a gas mains system a few metres away.
"Then we put some hand soap in a bottle of water and did the bubble test.
"We used the gas detector to find the approximate location of the leak, then soaped up some water to find exactly where the leak was," Mr Nicol said.
Once located, firefighters shut down the valve concerned and waited for gas authorities to arrive and take over.
About 8pm last night, Mount Maunganui firefighters were also called to a small power box on fire outside a Maunganui Rd home.
A dry powder extinguisher was used to put the fire out.
