Brick letter boxes were ripped apart in an orgy of destruction last night when a Tauranga neighbourhood was hit by vandals.
A woman out walking her dog at 6.30am today was shocked to see the extent of the damage in Solomon St, Brookfield.
"When I saw them, I just thought'oh my god'. It was quite disgusting," she told the Bay of Plenty Times.
She estimated that 15 letter boxes were damaged, including three very robust ones set in brick.
The woman, who did not want to be named out of fear her letter box would be next, said one of the brick letter boxes had been pulled in half.
"It was decimated. Goodness knows how they did that - it would have needed brute force."
She was amazed that no one was woken by the vandalism and suspects the noise was masked by heavy rain.
It was the first time that anything like this had happened in her four years living in the neighbourhood. The vandalised letter boxes were all on one side of Solomon St, between Aaron Place and the turn-off to the boardwalk. Conventional letter boxes either had the boxes ripped off the post or the whole lot was pushed over.
Real estate signs and a give way sign were also smashed.
Tauranga police were not alerted to the vandalism last night.
