Police have now reopened a section of State Highway 29A after a person was killed in a crash near Maungatapu this morning.
The highway near Maungatapu was blocked and emergency services remained at the scene for most of the day.
The crash happened shortly after 6.35am and involved two cars, about 1km north of the Maungatapu roundabout, which was where traffic was being diverted.
A police spokesman said a person had died at the scene and a second person had been transported to hospital in a moderate condition.
There were diversions in place and motorists were advised to avoid the area.
