More than 8000 televisions have been collected in the Bay of Plenty for recycling in the first three months of a nationwide switchover initiative.
A total of 8160 televisions were collected, including 3368 from Tauranga and 467 in the Western Bay of Plenty.
The Ministry for the Environment stated Tauranga had used up 64 per cent of its quota and the Western Bay had used 23 per cent.
The cost to recycle unwanted televisions in the Bay of Plenty has been subsidised by the Government since October 23. For a limited time, residents can take advantage of a subsidised fee of up to $5 for the drop off of unwanted televisions.
The TV TakeBack programme is an initiative that involves the Government partnering with a range of recyclers and retailers to provide a nationwide network of subsidised options for diverting televisions from landfill.
