Bay of Plenty consumers splurged $348.2 million in March, a 9.2 per cent increase on the amount spent for the same month last year.
Latest Paymark figures also show the number of transactions in the region also rose by 9.9 per cent to $7.44 million.
Spending nationally through Paymark was also up, with more building activity and Easter spending contributing to a boost in spending.
Paymark said the spending related to the housing sector formed part of the increase in spending.
"The annual growth rate in March of 8.3 per cent was well above the average 3.6 per cent of the previous six months. This pick-up was strongest amongst hardware/building suppliers and appliance stores."
