Firefighters say barbecue embers were the cause of a shelter belt blaze in Katikati overnight.

A Northern Fire Communications spokesman said firefighters were called to the fire on Katikati North Rd, State Highway 2, about 9.40pm on Sunday.

The spokesman said about 19m of pine trees had caught fire. "It looks like it was embers from a barbecue that caused it," he said.

The fire was recorded near the Orchard House Cafe and Palm Tree Cottage in Katikati's Tahawai district.

The Katikati Fire Brigade was called to the blaze and promptly put out the fire.
