Repairs to a Welcome Bay road after a significant water main break on Thursday morning are likely to take a few days, Tauranga City Council says.

Tauranga City Council contractors are at Waikite Rd working to repair "a significant water mains break down" after the council was made aware of the issue on Thursday morning, a council spokeswoman said.

"At this stage, there's no disruption to anyone's water supply. Our contractors are assessing how long the repairs are likely to take."

The council could not say, at this stage, how much water had leaked, she said.

"There's been significant damage to the road so the access will be down to one lane at times as we work on the repairs. We're still assessing the extent of the damage but the repairs are likely to take at least a few days. We ask motorists to please take care when driving through the area. "

The spokeswoman said the council has been in touch with residents whose driveways have been affected "and we're working to restore their access as soon as possible".
