A Welcome Bay man arrested by a police dog handler after he fled on foot following a police road pursuit remains behind bars.
Tony Ross McMurray, 32, appeared in Tauranga District Court yesterday and pleaded guilty to failing to stop for police, driving while disqualified, and refusing to permit a blood specimen being taken. A further charge of dangerous driving was withdrawn by police.
The charges McMurray admitted stem from an incident in Tauranga South on Sunday, May 6, when he was spotted by police driving in Harvey St and failed to stop when signalled to pull over.
McMurray drove off, reaching speeds of 75km/h in a 50km/h area. When he eventually stopped, he took off on foot but was arrested after a police dog handler located him nearby.
McMurray, who first appeared in court on May 7 following his arrest, was refused bail by Community Magistrate Lesley Jensen after she agreed with police that risk to public safety was too great for him to be released. Judge Thomas Ingram further remanded McMurray in custody pending sentence on June 19.
