Tauranga City Council is currently undertaking some digging and exploratory work at Cliff Rd to assess the archaeological significance of the site.
This is part of the council's work to assess the site and its cultural significance as a potential site for a museum.
The work will be completed end of this week and land will be sealed and grassed again, a council spokeswoman said.
