The Arataki Community Hall is being reduced to a pile of rubble as a demolition crew clears the way for its $1.7 million replacement in Grenada Park.
An RPL Services excavator moved in yesterday morning to demolish the hall, which had served as a sporting centrepoint for the community since it was built in 1983.
Tauranga City Council project manager Cameron Warr said the hall's structural condition had deteriorated over the years and the cost to upgrade or repair it was "quite significant".
More than 500 people attended a function on Saturday to farewell the hall, before equipment was removed from inside earlier this week.
Mr Warr expected the demolition process to last a week.
Councillors yesterday gave the final sign-off to proceed with the final design and construction of the new multi-use Arataki Community Centre.
The new centre is scheduled to be complete by July next year.
