Bay apprentice builders will be challenged to build a park seat for this year's apprentice competition.

Apprentices will have eight hours to build a park seat for this year's NZ Certified Builders Challenge, which is being held from 8am at Te Papa O Ngā Manu Porotakaka (formerly Phoenix carpark) in Mount Maunganui on Saturday.

Competitors will be provided with durable, trade-quality timber and materials, and their projects must meet minimum safety standards.

Apprentices' work will be judged by a panel of experienced building practitioners and industry educators who will award the top place to the apprentice that demonstrates the greatest quality of workmanship, accuracy of measuring and cutting, assembly, and ability to work to a detailed plan.

The winning apprentice will be crowned Bay of Plenty's 2019 NZCB Apprentice Challenge winner.

The event is open to the public and the best time to attend is from 3pm onwards, with the Bay's champion being announced around 5pm.

The winner will progress to the national final in Christchurch on June 14 to 15.
