TODAY'S LETTERS:
Is Bridges interested in welfare of hens, pigs?
I watched TV One's Make the Politician Work (Sunday, 29 May) with Simon Bridges at the SPCA in Auckland.
Simon was rightly concerned about the ill-treatment and suffering of many of the animals he came into contact with during the making of the programme.
I would be interested to know why Simon appears not to be equally concerned about the ill-treatment of farm animals in New Zealand such as pigs kept unnecessarily in sow crates and hens kept in battery cages.
When these issues have been debated in Parliament, Simon has consistently supported the Government which will not agree to the banning these inhumane practices.
I have previously challenged Simon directly on these very issues but he has never responded to me.
Though your newspaper, I would like to challenge him again to say why, on the one hand, he is concerned about cruelty to dogs and cats but, on the other, by voting with the Government, he is supporting and condoning animal cruelty on our farms?

Reverse bullying
I am not sure what AJ Ashe (letters to the editor) means by "do-gooders" but if he means, amongst other things, a person that does not believe in whacking children then I am a "do-gooder".
The subject of bullying is a complex issue that has been well documented and certainly should not be condoned.
The only thing hitting a child will do is confirm in their mind that if you can't get what you want or you want to subdue the other person lash out.
Reverse bullying?
Thank goodness we as a society are trying to move on and find better ways of dealing with it.
Lawrence Woods, Katikati
Thanks for time
I wish to thank councillors Murray Guy, Bill Grainger, Terry Molloy and David Stewart for giving up their valuable Sunday morning time to listen to problems many ratepayers are experiencing at the Mount Hot Pools.
They made themselves readily available to listen.
However, the real down side to the morning was that TCAL (the company that manages all Tauranga pools) chose to stage a meeting at the same date and time as the public one was advertised.
This was to be held at the rather flash conference room of the Twin Towers and was to be addressed by Warren Banks, chairman of TCAL.
This venue came complete with one security officer, cups of coffee and tea and probably other costs unknown to me. (Abridged)
Bob Sweetman, Tauranga
