Anger after Nepal donations stolen

A woman has been arrested following the theft of a donation bucket raising money for Nepalese people affected by the devastating earthquake on Anzac Day.

Mount Maunganui Constable Wayne Lewis said an 18-year-old woman had been arrested in relation to the theft.

She is expected to appear in Tauranga District Court sometime within the next week.

The bucket was stolen from Tauranga Central Backpackers yesterday, where a group of young Nepalese men live.

Backpackers owner Darryl Herbert said it was a terrible thing to happen in what had been an emotional and devastating week for his Nepalese guests.

"They're angry in their quiet Nepalese way," he said.

"We're extremely surprised someone would do this."

They had noticed the bucket was missing about 1pm and on reviewing the security footage saw a woman picking it up and walking out with it earlier in the day.

The bucket had only $10 or $15 in it but it was the intention that really upset them, Mr Herbert said.

"It's not the crime of the century but it's a disgusting thing to do.

"The Nepalese guys are walking around in a bit of a daze after it all.

"I had to calm them down a bit."

He hoped the woman would not be using the "Nepal Earthquake Fund" labelled bucket to collect money for herself and warned people to be aware of her.

Police confirmed they are investigating.
