Police are searching for the people who used a stolen car to steal alcohol and cigarettes from a Mount Maunganui store.

The burglary happened about 3.30am on Wednesday.

Acting Senior Sergeant Cam Anderson said a dark blue Subaru Legacy station wagon was stolen and used in the burglary of Liquor Hut on Macdonald St.

The car had a registration of AZD478 and a "distinctive bonnet scoop" as it was a GT twin turbo.

Mr Anderson said the car was yet to be recovered and no arrests had been made.
