A Tauranga office administrator unjustifiably dismissed after 12 days in the job has been awarded more than $9000 in compensation and costs.
The Employment Relations Authority has ruled Tauranga Horological Limited (THL) did not follow proper procedures when it fired Yvonne Dempsey on March 28 this year.
Yvonne Dempsey began working for THL on March 16 this year, and on March 28 she received a telephone call from the owner Jess Danby telling her she was no longer required.
Mr Danby told the Authority he realised he did not handle the matter in the most appropriate way, but was under a great deal of pressure and taking medication for stress and anxiety.
Employment Relations Authority member Vicki Campbell said: "I find the THL's actions and how it acted in terminating Ms Dempsey's employment was not what a fair and reasonable employer could have done in all of the circumstances, and the dismissal is unjustified."
