Young Hero Logan Lester received an award from SPCA's Cheniel Powell for saving a puppy.

Young Hero Logan Lester received an award from SPCA's Cheniel Powell for saving a puppy.

Te Puke's puppy hero was awarded for his bravery last night at the Te Puke Primary Christmas in the Park.

The Bay of Plenty Times reported last week of 9-year-old Logan Lester who rescued a 7-week-old puppy from a river.

Logan Dylan Lester was on his way to Te Puke Primary School last Tuesday when he saved the puppy, now named River.

Logan saw a tiny paw on a 'mossy root' coming out from the river, and went to investigate.

Once he realised it was a dog, he leaned down to pick her up out of the cold water.

He was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation signed by Tauranga Mayor Stuart Crosby and received a special award from the Tauranga SPCA for being a 'puppy hero'.

A smiling Logan was very happy to be recognised for his actions, as his family watched on.

Tauranga SPCA communication liaison Cheniel Powell presented the awards to Logan, and congratulated him on his efforts.

"Logan was active and innovative in what he did, you are a true achiever," Ms Powell said.

Ms Powell said Logan was a special 9-year-old, and was "oozing empathy".

Te Puke Primary principal Shane Cunliffe said what Logan did was "amazing and outstanding".

The puppy suffered from hypothermia from its time in the water, but had made a full recovery and would be up for adoption at the Tauranga SPCA next week.
