Whenever the late Phil Withy and his friends had a toast with whisky, he would say "kindest possible wish".
The Rotary Club of Tauranga Sunrise have saluted their friend, who passed away more than two years ago, by creating a whisky tasting fundraiser to raise money for young people, and honour Phil by calling it Kindest Possible Wish. This is the second time around for the fundraiser, which will go towards sponsoring locals predominantly on Outward Bound courses. Phil had always been passionate about helping young people.
Event organiser Dave Woodhouse says the evening is a "not-too-serious but educational exploration of some finer malt whiskies". You don't have to be a whisky expert, it's an opportunity to find out more, he says.
Michael Fraser Milne owns Whisky Galore in Christchurch. Phil and Michael were very good friends and of course, big fans of malt whisky. Michael will host the event and guide whisky lovers through a taste testing session of at least six single malts. Dave says the whiskies come from all parts of Scotland and each is different.
There is a special raffle prize; a bottle of Springbank 1992 Cask Strength single malt from a private bottling. Dave was the proud owner of 42 of these bottles (from a total of 168 worldwide) - he's given many away for fundraisers. The club also hopes there will be a Cricket World Cup memento up for raffle.
