An automated electrical system powered the ventilation, heating, security and sound systems and a state-of-the-art lighting configuration enhanced the drama and ambience of the home by night, judges said.
Astrid Andersen, general manager of Architectural Designers New Zealand (ADNZ), said the inclusion of a regional award category was a new concept for the annual awards and offered scope for each local branch to award their colleagues for a special project.
The award-winning bathroom was designed by Mr Gordon, in consultation with Linda Christensen of Kitchens by Design, and themed to complement the surf and sand concept evident throughout the property, Ms Andersen said.
Subtle colour tones, matai flooring, oval bath, basins and bidet, extensive use of glass and oversized mirrors match the style, materials and palettes used in the rest of the home.
The overall result was an elegant and sumptuous bathroom, she said.
Darryl Church, managing director of Darryl Church Architecture, was also a three-strike winner.
Mr Church won the Residential Alterations and Additions Design Award for an extension to a residential property that created an outdoor living and entertaining space complete with an open fire, a high pitched gabled roof canopy and a large barbecue grill.
Judges commented: "This well resolved composition, of limited extent, nevertheless reveals great skills by the designer."
Mr Church went on to secure two further awards for a conversion on an existing commercial building that saw it reclad, veiled in glass and reinvented as an accountants office.
Will Tatton, of Will Tatton Architecture in Mount Maunganui, was awarded the Residential Multi Unit Dwelling Design Award for two townhouses on a spectacular, if unusual, wedge shaped, waterfront site.
The Bright Wild Thomas project was selected for the Commercial/Industrial Design Award and was also recognised as a winner in the Commercial Interior Design Award category. Ms Andersen said nationally, entries in this year's competition were higher than ever before.
"Considering we are still in a recession, that is a really positive sign," she said. "Many of our entries were very impressive."
Judges this year were Tony van Raat, lecturer at Unitec, Tim Dagg, director from Christchurch-based architectural practice Sheppard and Rout, and Ross Maguire of Ross Maguire Architects Christchurch.
Regional category winners' projects will be submitted for the national awards that will be presented at the ADNZ/Resene Design Awards Gala Dinner at Te Papa, Wellington on October 28, 2011.
