Cheree Kinnear, lead of the video brand ‘Focus’ for The New Zealand Herald, pulls together compelling visual stories across news, sport and entertainment.
I'm Cheree Kinnear and I'm a Multimedia Journalist, having spent several years in sport, before moving to news video. Growing up, I would film and edit 'productions' I made with family friends every holiday. Combined with my love of writing and storytelling, being a video journalist was the perfect fit! I obtained a Bachelor of Communication at Massey University and was lucky enough to get my first taste of the industry in my third year landing an internship as a sports reporter at Fairfax Media. Not long after that, a job in the sports department came up at the Herald and it became my first full-time gig. Over the years, I've covered a number of major sporting events - both for editorial and video - such as the 2019 Rugby World Cup, 2019 Netball World Cup, 2021 America's Cup and the Tokyo Olympic Games. I now lead the Herald's video brand 'Focus' and have been loving the opportunity to meet interesting people every day and put together compelling visual stories for our audience. Outside of work, I keep my hunger for adrenaline satisfied by taking my motorbike for a spin, often with my parents who also ride! I’ll also find time to relax too, either with a cup of coffee or enjoying some fresh air and sunshine.
