NEW YORK (AP) An official with the Mexican Consulate in New York City and his wife are being questioned by police after the death of their 4-month-old son, authorities said Wednesday.
Eduardo Rocha Ovalle's parents brought him to a Manhattan hospital around 9 p.m. Tuesday unconscious and unresponsive, NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly said, but the child who was bruised and showed signs of trauma was declared dead about a half hour later.
An investigator for the city's medical examiner's office declared the death suspicious early Wednesday morning, Kelly said. An autopsy to determine the cause of death was inconclusive and further toxicology testing will be done, a spokeswoman for the medical examiner's office said.
The parents were not immediately identified but Kelly said the infant's father is employed by the Consulate General of Mexico.
"According to international law, the Consulate General will provide the family the Consular assistance and protection required," said Carlos Gerardo Izzo, a spokesman for the Consulate General of Mexico in New York. He said the father worked as a consular officer, who helps prepare travel and identity documents.
