Wanganui's Central League team enjoyed an outstanding game of hockey on Sunday ... even if they did come out the wrong side of a five-goal thriller.
Up against Hawke's Bay in the competition's fourth round at Levin, Wanganui had enough chances to win the game.
While they were without key players Craig Ritani, Matt Ratcliffe and Bryce McKenzie, Wanganui benefited from the efforts of young High School players Daniel and Jack Aplin and Alex Watkins as a penalty strike by Luke Kirk and a goal from Brett Puklowski kept them in touch.
Coach Les Wilson said a good crowd enjoyed a quality game.
"We had more clear chances but were denied by some very good goalkeeping.
"That said, our keeper Andrew Jurgens made four excellent saves," said Wilson.
In the Manawatu League, Tech Old Boys took the points as Massey defaulted in their match.
Wanganui High School had a tough task away against PN Boys High, going down 2-1.
Coach Langley Atkinson described the game as a "tough arm-wrestle" in the first half which ended 1-1.
The home side took an early lead after the break and despite a fast and furious battle, WHS couldn't find an equaliser.
In the Manawatu women's division, Collegians gained a heartening 2-2 draw against High School Hockey Club.
