Wanganui East Club's petanque pair of Yvonne Futcher and Sue Gurr teamed with Annick Le Guen, from Kapiti, to claim second in the National Women's Triples competition in Otaki at the weekend.
After qualifying as third seeds on Saturday, the trio defeated one of the favourite teams, Joanne Lippard, Pam Jenkins, from Auckland; and Barbara Johnston, from Masterton, in the semifinal 13/3.
They went on to have a gruelling fight against the Canterbury trio, and 2011 national tittle holders, Tina Target, Chris Taylor and Karen Stephen in the final. Christchurch won the tournament 13/9 in a marathon two-hour game.
Meanwhile, fellow Wanganui East Club players Christine Strichen and Sheryl Parslow (playing with Claire Wilson (Masterton) also faired well finishing third equal after bowing out in the semi-final to the Christchurch team. This team was first seed overnight with just one loss from five pool games on Saturday.
Several Wanganui East players have now set their sights on Regional and National Singles, minus Strichen who heads to France for a second crack at the Woman's World Championship. The rest of the world's team are Claire Wilson (Masterton), Barbara Johnston (Masterton) and Joanne Lippard (Auckland).
