BOWLS:Well, have I had it given to me. After thinking I had done rather well by giving the senior women's team more column inches than I usually do on any subject involving women and bowls, an e-mail arrives in my inbox. The introduction of it I quote verbatim.
"As is fairly typical of newspapers in general,?emphasis is always placed on how well the "Top" team/grade/division has performed at a tournament and no mention (or hardly any) is made of lower teams/grades/divisions. The women's development team performed well at the Octagonal and I think?their results deserve a mention in?your column."
"Everyone deserves a pat on the back for the support given to each other over the weekend - we were a real team.? Thanks to Joy, Alton, Roberta, Karen, Anne, Arabia, Syria, Cynthia, Sadie, Robin, Robin, Claire, Lorraine, Deanna, Wendy and Dianne.? As a team we did it."
So in accordance with The Fairness in Commentary Act of 1999 I am pleased to supply the following information which was also supplied, but have taken journalistic license in an effort to give the story more flow.
The Women's Development Team were runners up in their competition finishing a game and a half behind Taranaki. The highlight of the competition was leading the event after the first day when all combinations went through unbeaten. The four of Robin Evans (skip), Robin Firmin, Claire Ellen and Lorraine Mangin won six out of their seven games while the pair of Deanna Shepherd (skip) and Wendy Stuthridge strung together four and half wins. Singles player Dianne Patterson also did her part by providing with four wins.
All in all a fairly commendable performance which went a long way to secure the Skoglund Trophy, which is calculated by the total number of wins each centre has over the four competitions held at the Octagonal. ?? Well there it is, done and dusted, another happy reader emerges from the newsagent and thank you for the information.
But one thing I am wondering is, why not be a bit more pro active in this sort of thing and let me know what is going on. I may be a lot of things but a mind reader I am not.

As you may recall the column from a fortnight ago came to you from Christchurch where a strange set of circumstances took place. At about 9.05 on the first day of play, with his first bowl, one particular skip, no doubt suffering after celebrating a day too early, was asked to play a shot.
Well, he let it go, the weight looked outstanding, and the line, well that looked ok too until the natural bias of the bowl took over and it careered away through a couple of rinks where his nonplussed three had to retrieve it, much to the guffawing of the rest of his team-mates, who didn't let it lie all weekend.
So now its guessing time, another chocolate fish is up for grabs if you can tell me who this person was. Those who were down there are banned from entering, I know who you are. So you let me know and I'll let you know if you've won the chocolate fish.
