With the New Zealand Masters Games just around the corner Sport Wanganui is gearing up to an exciting week co-ordinating three sports.
In 2011 Sport Wanganui ran the Corporate Challenge and Gnarly Guy & Gal events, with both proving to be extremely popular. This year will see both of those events again, as well as a new event for the Masters Games _ Ultimate Frisbee.
Ultimate Frisbee is an exciting sport which is becoming increasingly popular in New Zealand with strong clubs in Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury, Palmerston North, Hamilton and Nelson. Ultimate is a limited contact sport which is a mix of Netball, Touch Rugby and American Football. The object is to score points by passing the disc to team members, getting it to someone in the goal zone to score. Players may not run with the disc, and a dropped or missed throw leads to a turnover. Ultimate will be played at Springvale Park on Tuesday, February 5 from 1pm onwards and there are still spaces available for teams to sign up! Players only have to be 20 years old to enter, at a cost of $20 per person.
The Corporate Challenge promises to be another exciting event for local businesses, with mystery challenges taking place at various locations around Wanganui. Nine teams are entered to date, and as with Ultimate there are still spaces available. This event will take place on Friday, February 8 from 3pm onwards.
Gnarly Guy & Gal is for those games athletes who don't mind a bit of mud and water! Taking place on Wednesday, February 6 at the Kowhai Park Domain this event promises to challenge you both mentally and physically. Slippery surfaces, stream crossings, mud trekking and many other obstacles will make this one gnarly event! There is still time to enter the Gnarly Guy & Gal, but be prepared to get very dirty.
