AGE AND experience has played a major part in determining the inaugural Wanganui Dirt Rider of the Year.
Forty-eight-year-old competitor Danny Williamson has an almost unassailable lead in the new category going into the fourth and final round of the Wanganui Motorcycle Club's annual Motocross winter series at Landguard Bluffon Sunday.
Williamson, a mechanic by trade, has had a busy season riding in both the A-grade and Veteran series. He is in top form after winning eight of nine veteran races in the three rounds to date.
There are three races in each grade at the Motorsport Domain on Sunday, although only points from one grade will count toward the Dirt Rider of the Year, a competition introduced this season.
The Dirt Rider of the Year consists of three motocross rounds and two cross-country rounds which have been held over the past six months.
Wanganui riders fill the first three placings on points so far with Williamson on top from Seamus Manson and Ant Rountree second and third.
Williamson, who has ridden brilliantly all season, will just need to finish safely to claim the title on Sunday.
More than 150 riders from New Plymouth to Wellington will be competing over all grades on Sunday, making the event a great spectacle. Racing starts at 10am at the Airport Rd venue and entry is free for spectators.
