Around 80-100 children turned the St Johns Hill School grounds into their own Tour de France racing track yesterday afternoon as part of a special fun day of bicycle racing while learning riding skills using obstacles, was organised as part of the Kiwi Kids series.
The Wanganui Mountain Biking Club ran the event as a fun day and to create a way to build cycling skills for youngsters. The club was assisted by Sport Wanganui as their contribution to February, Bike Wise month.
All the children, some as young as 2, some as old as 13, had their helmets specifically fitted before taking part in races around the school field course. Prizes included a chocolate fish, a McDonald's burger voucher and entry into a competition to win a bicycle provided by the Bike Shed.
There are four other cycling events coming up in the Kiwi Kids series, which will finish in April.
