Silent reading, reading aloud, writing about what you've read is all part of the Wild about Reading programme at the South Taranaki District Libraries.

Library staff say encouraging a love of books and reading is one of the most important things parents can do to help develop a child's literacy skill

More than 200 children have enrolled in the six-week summer reading programme throughout South Taranaki and library staff have been flat out preparing jungle-themed backdrops and small specially constructed lairs for reading one on one to a librarian.

Each child has been given a special folder to record the library books they have read.

As they come to share their library books with a staff member they are also given
a small gift and a book at the completion of the programme
