Wanganui Harrier Club played host to the Athletics Manawatu-Wanganui Centre's road championships with representatives from around four of the region's clubs pounding pavement in Whanganui East on Saturday.

The start and finishing line was located outside the parking lot of the Wanganui East Club, a major Harrier club sponsor, with the races split into age groups consisting of 1km to 10km in length for walkers and runners.

Spokeswoman Mandy Jones said the course was reasonably flat with little wind, although the last runners coming in had to endure the first heavy rainfall of the daylight hours.

"We secured lots of placings again with the most impressive effort coming from Nathaniel Kirk in the Boys 15 [years]," said Jones.

"He claimed his first centre title and clocked a very good time of 11m 12s for his 3km.
