Gonville Library celebrated World Book Day for the first time ever yesterday to help expose the community to the different types of literature available to them.
"I think people generally get caught into reading the same authors, the same types of genres," said librarian Kelly Harrison, who set up a display of books with authors from different countries, and attached flags to show the author's nationality.
"Part of the job I love the most is extending people's reading styles," she said. "There's a whole world of books out there."
Kiwi readers tended to favour British, American and Kiwi authors, she said, and then only "big name" authors.
"Researching this for the last couple of weeks, it has astounded me how many other nationalities of authors we have," said Ms Harrison, who has been a librarian for five years.
