What happened to Whanganui's missing letter H

Astute viewers may have noticed that the "H" was missing from the screen graphic during a recent Newshub weather forecast.

Ingrid Hipkiss was not presenting the forecast on Sunday night but she said she was happy to make an apology on behalf of Mediaworks.

"An old graphic image must have popped up and no-one noticed," she said.

"Our recent images all include the "H" in Whanganui."

"It is good to learn that someone was being that attentive while watching the weather."

TV weather forecasters have been using the "H" in Whanganui since it became official in November 2015 after the decision was made by Land Information Minister Louise Upston.

Ms Upston said the name "Wanganui" had no meaning in te reo Maori, but "Whanganui" had a number of traditions in Maori oral history.

It also ensured the district name was consistent with the official names of the river and city.
