Whanganui's Jane Winstone retirement home collects food for a good cause

Residents and staff at Jane Winstone Retirement Village showed their generous side with a recent food drive.

Over the last few weeks, residents and staff have been donating food which will be given to the City Mission's foodbank in time for the pre-Christmas rush.

"We did it last year and it went down really well," activities manager Rochelle Taylor said.

"We also held a Pink Ribbon breakfast and a Blue Ribbon breakfast this year, so we decided to also run the foodbank drive again. We're really pleased with the response."

Jane Winstone has 114 staff and 170 residents, although residents in the higher-dependency care centre did not take part.

Ms Taylor said she didn't know how many items of food had been donated "but it's a lot".

Centre manager Sue Buchanan said she was glad staff and residents were able to do something for a good cause.

"So many people are struggling. Christmas can be a really tough time," she said.
