Temperatures are expected to climb in Whanganui as Wellington Anniversary weekend approaches.

Whanganui is forecast to reach a high of 26C on Friday and 28C on Saturday and Sunday, and temperatures in the mid-teens as the lows.

Showers are expected on Friday and Sunday.

MetService meteorologist Clare O’Connor said Whanganui could look forward to “settled” weather this week.

“We are seeing a shift out of the colder temperatures we’ve been having across the whole country.”

O’Connor said residents would notice cool nights similar to last week’s and might wake to clouds.

“It’ll be a cold one the next two nights.

“[Whanganui] may see overnight, early-morning cloud that will clear up in the afternoons.”

Temperatures until Thursday have an average high of 21C and direct southeasterly winds that will provide a cool breeze.

The weekend will also bring southeasterlies, but O' Connor said they would be less directly from the south.

“It’s not necessarily coming up from the Cook Strait, it’s coming over from the east instead; it will be lighter winds in general, so it will feel warmer.”
