The lion that usually sits atop the Queen's Park memorial to British soldiers who died during the New Zealand Wars lies cut in half as workers restore the monument.
The refurbishment began last week and is expected to be finished in July.
The monument was unveiled in 1893 on the site where the Sarjeant Gallery now sits but was moved to its present spot on the Veterans' Steps between 1915 and 1919.
It will be deconstructed, refurbished and put back together with all work done on site. A paper image of the memorial will be put in place for Anzac Day.
