Whanganui Fire Brigade called to assist four people locked in Durie Hill Tower

Four people who were “accidentally” locked in the Durie Hill Tower on Tuesday night had to be helped by the Whanganui Fire Brigade.

Fire and Emergency NZ shift manager Murray Dunbar said they were called out at 11.43pm and found the group had been locked in the Durie Hill Tower.

“I think they’d accidentally been locked in,” Dunbar said.

“It was probably a bit traumatic for the people that got locked in there.”

Whanganui firefighters were called to the tower at 11.43pm on Tuesday.

Fire and Emergency Whanganui senior station officer Shane Dudley said firefighters called the security company to come and let out the people trapped in the tower.

Dunbar said two fire trucks from Whanganui Fire Station were sent to the incident.

“It was only about 15 minutes.

“Just long enough to know that someone was coming back to help them.”

He said the two fire trucks had left by 11.56pm.

Police said they attended after a report of people locked in a building on Durie Hill and referred any further queries to the Whanganui District Council.

A sign at the entrance to the tower says “This tower will be closed at dusk every day. When the hooter is sounded, please vacate immediately”.

The council, which is responsible for the tower, has been contacted for comment.
