At least 38 Wanganui shops will burst forth with a concerted symphony of sales early next month.
Wanganui on Sale was an initiative of Mainstreet Wanganui, facilitator Geoff Follett said.
It is planned for September 2-5 and will coincide with normal winter stock clearance sales.
A similar co-ordinated sale had been done in Napier several times and been successful, the city's deputy Mayor Kathie Furlong told Mainstreet's business promotions committee.
Mainstreet Wanganui asked businesses whether they wanted to try it and two weeks later had already received 38 affirmatives - from more than a third of the retailers in the central business district.
Mr Follett said the shops would be able to choose how many bargains they offered and would benefit from advertising as a group.
"It's not a bargain basement thing. There are sales on in town anyway, they're traditional at this time of year, and it will give people a chance to beat the GST increase that comes in on October 1."
Wanganui will be city of sales
