New Zealand's oldest army regiment has stepped up to help Wanganui after the region's recent calamity.
The Queen Alexandra's Mounted Rifles Regiment, which was founded in Wanganui, spent three days over the last two weeks reinstalling the path along the riverside portion of flooded Kowhai Park.
The Linton-based soldiers dug out over 10cm of silt to find the original track, then reconstructed the wooden edges and filled it with sheet rock.
The 12 soldiers and their unit have a 150-year link with the city. The Queen Alexandra's Mounted Rifles Regiment's precursor, the Alexandra Troop of the Wanganui Cavalry Volunteers, was established in the city in 1864. The regiment is now part of the Royal New Zealand Armoured Corps.
Lieutenant Ian Eagle said his team really enjoyed the work and were exhausted at the end of each day.
