The Wanganui girls have made a solid start to their campaign for the Rawleigh Trophy at the Regional under-13 Hockey tournament in Napier, while the boys have stumbled on Hatch Cup national duty in Auckland.
The girls had an epic 3-nil victory over Manawatu Development on Sunday when Rhiannon Clutterbuck scored two and Maggie Jones one. They took on Wellington Development on a sodden turf that got even wetter as the game progressed.
Wanganui girls coach Aaron Manville said the game was called off 14 minutes early when the score was 1-all.
"The turf was pretty wet when we started, but it got even worse and neither side could move the ball with any speed whatsoever," Manville said.
Captain Charlotte Baker scored the only Wanganui goal against Wellington Development.
The side then faced off with Taranaki B thrashing their neighbours 8-nil.
Maggie Jones slotted three goals, while Baker scored two from penalty corners and Clutterbuck, Emily Cooper and Charlotte Hardy scored one each.
"Great results so far with all girls playing fantastic hockey, but there some sleepy faces this morning," Manville said on Tuesday.
