Forest and Bird stalwarts have carved out a new track in part of Sutherland's Bush, a reserve in the Turakina Valley.
It was opened last week when a group walked the trail and enjoyed a picnic lunch along the way.
The reserve is 20km west of Hunterville at the junction of Turakina Valley and Mangahoe roads. It's in three parts.
The main part is reached by climbing a stile and the new track is just across the road, on an outlying patch of bush.
The track takes about 1hr 15m and follows a route cut by Archie Sutherland and his workers, to reach the site of the original homestead.
