Rangitikei College students are throwing their footwear down as a challenge to others to go barefoot for a day and raise money for charity.
Soles for Syria is a campaign launched by students Elle Welsh, Zac Scott and Jermaine Moke to raise $50,000 to donate to the ReliefAid charity initiative run by Mike Seawright of Auckland.
Elle, who is head girl at the college, and Year 12 students Jermaine and Zac have joined the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) and decided to go with a charity fundraiser rather than a business idea.
They are mentored by deputy principal Jeff King and the Soles for Syria (SOS) idea came about while they were discussing their ideas with him.
"Jeff mentioned that he knows Mike Seawright of ReliefAid so we got in touch and learned about his partnership with UK charity ShelterBox that delivers supplies into Syria," said Elle.
