"We have a group of eight volunteers who help to run the market stall," Mrs Hobbs said.
"One of them brings the products over from Palmerston North every fortnight and the others take turns running the stall. With only eight, we're a bit thin on the ground so we're always looking for more people who are interested in a social enterprise, helping people in developing countries."
Palmerston North Trade Aid store manager Nicky Armstrong says the market stall is only possible because of the commitment of Whanganui volunteers to continue providing fair trade products for the region.
"Trade Aid has always worked as a movement," Mrs Armstrong said.
"It has always been about people and volunteers. The goal is to make as much as we can for the producers."
The market stall sells only food products including, amongother things, fair trade organic coffee, chocolate, sugar, rice, Palestinian olive oil, spices, quinoa, coconut milk and sustainable masala chai tea from India.
"It's really heartening to see the support in the Whanganui community for fair trade, organic, ethical products," Mrs Armstrong said.
The Trade Aid stall is at the Whanganui River Traders Market on the first and third Saturdays of the month. People who are interested in volunteering can contact Jill Hobbs on 021 207 0111.
Trade Aid is a New Zealand organisation established in 1973. It sources handmade, fair trade products from more than 65 trading partner organisations which represent small farmers and artisans in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Palestine and the Pacific.
