Whanganui veteran Don Merito served in three Asian countries and came away with 12 different health problems.
Malaya, Borneo and Vietnam left him with post traumatic stress disorder, a heart problem, varicose veins and more. His hands tremble as he searches his wallet for his Veterans' Affairs entitlement card.
He was one of 70 veterans at the Whanganui Returned and Services Association (RSA) on Monday, to hear what Veterans' Affairs can do for them.
He's already getting heaps of help from the department - lawn mowing, gardening, physiotherapy, a gym membership, travel to Palmerston North to see a specialist - even the parking fee while he's at the appointment.
"I'm actually very lucky, because I have a beautiful case manager, Lynne Thomas. She's helping me put together a comprehensive package for my well-being," he said.
