Hot on the heels of winning their West Coast North Island road cycling titles Whanganui riders Glenn Haden and Pat Johnstone backed up by claiming dual medal success at the Vantage Age Group National Road Cycling Championships in Pleasant Point near Timaru over the weekend.
Haden won gold in the Senior Men Time Trial and claimed the silver medal in the 105km road race. Haden clocked 31 minutes 21 seconds for the Time Trial, 29 seconds ahead of Canterbury Time Trial Association rider Jake Marryatt who finished in 31:50 with Te Awamutu Sports Cycling Club's Logan Griffin third in 31:58.
The roles were reversed in the Senior Men's 105km Road Race with just two hundreths of a second separating the first three home. Marryatt claimed victory clocking 2:33:09 with
Haden second on 2:33:10 and Griffin again third on 2:33:11.
Johnstone achieved the same results as Haden, although in the Masters Men 65-69 age group. Johnstone won the Time Trial in 2:06 ahead of Martin Fletcher from Marlborough (24:36). In the Road Race Johnstone and Canturbury rifder Dennis Parker both stopped the clock on 1:54:59 with thelatter given the nod on the line.
In the Junior U19 Road Race Kyle Hoskin produced a top performance in a large field of 60 riders to place 7th, while evergreen Alan Luff produced two good rides in his Masters Men 70-75 age group placing 4th in the Time Trial and 5th in the Road Race.
