Trees on a Whanganui East street are being removed so repair work to prevent "significant ponding" can be carried out.
The trees would be replaced this month, a Whanganui District Council spokeswoman said.
Contractors were busy on Thursday pulling up 11 silver birch trees from the even side of Young St, between Boydfield and Milton Sts.
The spokeswoman said the trees needed to be removed so infrastructure repair work could be done, which would prevent significant ponding during heavy rain. She said the trees were "aged and in a poor condition".
"A new kerb and channel will be constructed which will create a wider berm area for planting new trees to replace those removed.
