The Desert Road will be closed for 36 hours due to repair work being undertaken on the Waihohonu Bridge starting at 7am on March 7.
However, travellers should not fret, as a detour will send them along scenic roads full of stunning sights through the Ruapehu region.
Ruapehu Mayor Don Cameron said that people can take the opportunity to enjoy some of the most iconic scenery and attractions the volcanic plateau has to offer.
"The detour route takes people around the world heritage listed Tongariro National Park, past the Chateau Tongariro Hotel, Mt Ruapehu ski areas, National Park Village and Ohakune - all offering a great variety of things to see and do," he said.
The alternate route then joins back up with SH1 at the impressive National Army Museum in Waiouru.
