Ryan Calver, Andrew Wetherall, Nigel Bateman and Uriah Wallace are The Replicants, playing live (how else?) at Lucky Bar and Kitchen this Saturday.
Each of the members brings a long, illustrious musical pedigree to the band and a wide range of abilities. Together, they are a strong, tight, covers rock band with broad appeal.
Their set list ranges through rock bands from the 1960s to now.
"It's a collection of songs that we thought people would want to hear," says Nigel, the drummer.
Old songs with a modern twist.
"We give them The Replicants treatment," says guitarist Andrew, who is head of music at City College.
"We try and pick those sort of 'B'-side type of songs: ones you know but you don't hear all the time," says vocalist Ryan.
The band stemmed from a Red Hot Chili Peppers tribute band of 2012 — the Green Cold Capsicums — and, in its present line-up, has been playing together for more than a year.
The Replicants have played two Vintage Weekends, a couple of weddings plus local venues, including New Year at Caroline's Boatshed. They're also looking further afield for gigs.
"There are not a lot of places to play in Whanganui," says Andrew. "You have to make your own opportunities."
Before Midweek left the band to it, they gave me a rendition of Roadhouse Blues. They are very good.
